The Thessalonian church is the picture of a model church. Three aspects are highlighted: 1) their work of faith, 2) their labor of love, and 3) their steadfast hope.

Paul displays what a model messenger looks like in the church. Three aspects are shared about the model messenger: 1) explaining the gospel and the Word of God; 2) speaking boldly because they were convinced of the truth of their message, and their aim was to please God and not man; 3) their speech is gentle and vulnerable, but also tough and challenging.

Paul stresses the importance of spiritual friendships by describing his relationship with the Thessalonians. Hindrances to spiritual friendships involve 1) Satan's attack on spiritual relationships; 2) codependency; 3) being disengaged. The strengths and weaknesses of the tribal and diffuse approach to relationships are also explained.

Paul gives direction to the Thessalonians on how to view sex and how they are sanctified by adopting God's view of sex. There is a contrast between the world's view of sex, porneia, and God's view of sex in marriage. The cultural norm for sex is critiqued, and a vision is put forth for what it looks like to have God at the center of relationships.

Paul clarifies his teaching about the afterlife since it seemed like the Thessalonians misunderstood him. He helps them see the reality of eternity and what they can look forward to. With this in view, Paul encourages them to live with purpose in this life rather than wasting time on empty pursuits.

Amid the confusion of how to lead spiritually, Paul echoes Jesus in calling leaders to become a servant of all. An explanation is given for the main pursuits, efforts, and cost of leadership; as well as esteeming and appreciating leaders. Finally, actions are laid out on how to start moving towards leadership now.

Paul directs the Thessalonians to help three specific groups of people in three specific ways: 1) admonish the unruly, lazy, and rebellious; 2) encourage the fainthearted, suffering, or those facing failures; 3) help the spiritually and physically weak. Paul also calls the church to be patient and gracious with all types of people.

Paul focuses on how to have a healthy relationship with God through prayer, rejoicing, and thankfulness. Paul also focuses on how we can be led by God: 1) with His Spirit; 2) with prophecy (speaking on behalf of God); 3) not quenching the Spirit and saying no to God's leading; 4) to discern what is from God and what is not by comparing it to Scripture; 5) being comforted by God's power and faithfulness.
