Paul writes to the church in Thessalonica to teach them aspects of Godly influence. He calls on them to imitate his life as he has imitated Jesus' life. He explains five ways to be influential: 1) lead by example; 2) be persuasive; 3) pray for others; 4) communicate gratitude; and 5) give concrete encouragement.

Paul explains three essential things that can ignite a movement and make a church effective: speaking the Gospel message, having deep personal connections, and instilling lasting convictions. Unwillingness to directly call people to this better way of life is what hinders a movement. The Thessalonians experienced this because they pressed each other towards what was better. God gives His resources for His people to live this way.\r\n

Paul teaches the Thessalonians to follow God's will for sexuality and to be sanctified in this area. He explains that this means we live distinctly from the culture in regards to sex. The Roman views of sex and family are the same as our contemporary views. Paul addresses three assumptions about sex: 1) sex is an amoral natural impulse; 2) anything goes between consenting adults; and 3) how we view the self. He teaches that biblical sexuality is radically different and better.\r\n

Paul teaches the Thessalonians about two biblical themes of sexuality: 1) the melding of persons; and 2) self-giving love. God's intent and purpose are radically different than the culture's, then and now. His way is better. Paul contrasts our culture's view that sexuality is for the benefit of self versus God's view that it is to benefit the spouse. God's way of sexuality mirrors His character and brings intimacy to the marriage relationship.\r\n

Paul teaches that sexuality is impacted largely by identity, culture, and conformity. He teaches that God wants His people to live distinctly in this life. God's way is better than the culture's way. The teenage years are a time of seeking to belong and be normal through sexual identity. Parents and the Christian community (peers and other parents) have a huge role in working together to influence their teens along God's ways. This is much more effective than trying to figure things out alone while under the culture's influence.\r\n

Paul encourages the Thessalonians by reminding them of the hope and confidence they have in life after death. He calls on them to comfort one another with this truth. Believing in life after death has tremendous impact on how we live. Confidence, joy, freedom, and fulfillment are a few results that come from having this hope. This truth challenges us to ask ourselves if we are confident in what happens after death.\r\n

Paul reminds the Thessalonians about the Day of the Lord. The Day of the Lord refers to God's involvement in the end of the world. No one knows the day or time this will happen but the Bible describes warning signs. Two types of signs include: 1) increasing intensity and frequency of wars, famines, and ecological disasters; and 2) the nation of Israel and the Temple are restored and all nations hear the Gospel. Paul calls Christians to be sober and alert, encouraging one another in faith, hope, and love. It is God's will for Christians to live this way in order to share his Good News with those who have not yet heard.\r\n

We can live distinctly in Christian community because of God's involvement. It is His will that His people live in peace. His power transforms us and results in changed lives. Christian community should have five distinct qualities: 1) encouragement; 2) admonition; 3) helpfulness; 4) patience; and 5) graciousness. God cares for our lives and is faithful to bring about positive changes.

Paul explains key attitudes that reflect and foster God's sanctifying work in a Christians life. The five attitudes he mentions are: 1) rejoicing; 2) prayerfulness; 3) gratitude; 4) sensitivity to the Spirit; 5) forth telling-giving God's perspective. God is involved in this lie long process of transformation.\r\n
