Paul's letter to the Philippian church was written around 62 AD while Paul was under house arrest. Paul had received the Philippians' donation and heard about their suffering. Throughout the letter, Paul encouraged the church to persevere and view their suffering in light of what God is doing and exhort them to not give up. We can still choose to rejoice amidst difficult circumstances.

As the apostle Paul begins his letter, he communicates an eternal perspective amidst severe suffering and imprisonment. Paul actively takes six steps to cultivate this perspective: 1) thanksgiving for past blessings; 2) confidence in God's work continuing; 3) remembering that he was not alone in God's work; 4) seeing his suffering in context of God's larger plan; 5) keeping his priorities in order; and 6) keeping a focus on eternity.

Once we have received the gospel, we are called to live lives that reflect what God has done in our life. The apostle Paul advocates this to the church of Philippi. Paul highlights three aspects of understanding God's love: 1) Placing a high value on unity with other Christians; 2) God is sovereign; and 3) God's love includes letting us suffer. Rather than shy away from, God calls us to draw close to Him and one another as we try and emulate Jesus' love and humility in our lives.

Paul warns the Philippian church about legalism, a works based approach to drawing close to God. Legalism has negative effects on Christians, including being contagious to others and destroying our intimacy with God. Paul looks back on his own life to warn them of these dangers and encourage the Philippian believers to stand firm in their new identity in Christ and operate under God's grace to grow with Him.

Paul is concerned about the Philippians resorting to legalism by way of false teachers, and encourages them to stand firm and united against this teaching. Paul expresses several ways a church can stand firm: 1) fight the urge to live in disharmony with one another; 2) stand firm in the Lord together with others; 3) keep an eternal perspective; 4) let God's work in your life be known to others; 5) pray rather than be anxious; and 6) make time for the things that matter most.

Paul expresses his gratitude to the Philippians for their generosity to support him financially. He expresses his ability to learn contentment in whatever the circumstances. Four principles are seen that have helped Paul be content: 1) being grateful for what he has; 2) remembering wealth is not a means to an end; 3) actively guarding the heart against greed; and 4) understanding generosity as a means to worship God.
