Expository Notes

The purpose of these outlines is to help teachers stay within the logic and theology of the text, rather than the near universal habit of topical teaching. Standing under the authority of God's word means faithfully communicating the meaning of the text as the author intended.

These paragraph by paragraph outlines of New Testament epistles lay the framework to teach with faithfulness to the text. Each outline has three parts:

  • Structure (skeleton). The logic of the passage, identifying the main point and how it is supported within the paragraph.
  • Content (muscle). The key theological ideas explored in the paragraph and which give the text its meaning.
  • Application (skin). What might the text look like in practice, to the original audience, to the church, and to each of us individually?
