Empathy—the ability to understand the perspective and feelings of another person—is an essential quality of a loving Christian. It helps us effectively respond to the needs of others, and reflects God’s heart and approach to people. If we lack empathy, we can work to develop it. But we can also allow empathy to have an inappropriately dominating role, letting respect for others’ feelings prevent us from pursuing God’s will and mission as we should.
